Examining the nature of tolerance and ostracism, Shakespeare also plays with the nature of comedy and drama in this notorious -- and fearless-- issues play.
"All that glisters is not gold. . . "
In a time where there glossy weekly media have far greater readership than the newsmagazines and where racism still occurs daily in the must subtle of ways, The Merchant of Venice forces us to confront our bigotries, hypocrisies, and obsession with status.
In this production High Finance meets High Fashion . The world of the Christians is that of venture capitalism, socialites, hedge funds, entourages, and the youngest, most beautiful celebrities. Youth, power, fast money, popularity and looks are what carry weight in this world. Anyone not possessing such currency is left harshly on the outside of a glitteringly shallow- yet alluringly powerful- world.
-Heather Parish
Director Heather Parish is the Artistic Director of the Woodward Shakespeare Festival and directed last season's Richard III.
